Who Tells Your Story: Monthly Book Discussion

6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Event Details

Who Tells Your Story is an all ages book discussion group in which we will primarily explore titles from Own Voices authors, or authors who are from a marginalized/underrepresented group writing about their own experiences and/or writing from their own perspective. Featuring author visits from Ami Polonsky, Saadia Faruqi, Laura Shovan, and Lisa Fipps!

Our August selection is Starfish by Lisa Fipps. * Our guest speaker will be none other than author Lisa Fipps*

A stunning debut novel-in-verse that emphasizes body positivity and learning to love oneself. From the publisher, Ellie has been constantly bullied about her weight by both classmates and her pushy mother. Therefore, Ellie has learned to live by the "Fat Girls Rule" some of which include "No making waves", "Avoid eating in public", and "Don't jiggle so much that your body moves." And she has found her true safe space-- her swimming pool-- where she feels weightless in a fat-obsessed world. In the water, she can stretch herself out like a starfish. Will Ellie be able to abandon her Fat Girl Rules and starfish in real life by unapologetically being her own fabulous self.
